Privacy policy

Effective date: 6 May 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Snack Surf collects, uses and shares information when you use this website, including its recommendation, rating and advertising features.

Who we are

Snack Surf is operated by Nova Ventures GmbH. For privacy requests or questions, contact the operator at:

Information we collect

  • Request and device data. When you visit the site or call the API, our hosting, edge and API providers may process technical data such as IP address, page URL, browser type, language, approximate country, time zone, referrer, date and time, and error or security logs.
  • Recommendation context. The homepage may send browser language, time zone, approximate country hints, recent snack ids and a random viewer id to the recommendation API so it can return locally relevant and less repetitive snacks.
  • Manual QA overrides. In environments where they are enabled, query parameters such as overrideCountry and overrideTimeZone may be sent to test geographic and time-zone behaviour.
  • Ratings. If you rate a snack as Pass, Like or Love, we store the rating with the snack id, an anonymous viewer id and an update time. Ratings are backed by MongoDB in deployed environments and by a local file in development.
  • Browser storage. The site uses local storage for an anonymous viewer id, recent snack history and your snack ratings state. These values help the site remember recommendations and ratings without requiring an account.
  • Advertising data. Google AdSense and advertising partners may collect or receive information through cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, browser identifiers and similar technologies when ads are served or measured.

How we use information

  • To provide snack recommendations, snack detail pages and anonymous ratings.
  • To keep recommendations varied across browsing sessions.
  • To maintain site security, debug errors and prevent abuse.
  • To operate, measure and improve the website.
  • To display, measure and fund the site with advertising where AdSense is enabled.
  • To comply with legal obligations and enforce site terms.

Advertising, cookies and consent

Snack Surf uses Google AdSense. Google and other third-party ad vendors may use cookies or similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites, to limit repeated ads, to measure ad performance and to help prevent fraud.

You can learn how Google uses data from partner sites at Google's partner-site data page. You can manage Google ad personalisation at My Ad Centre. You may also be able to opt out of some third-party personalised advertising through aboutads.info or, in Europe, Your Online Choices.

For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google requires legally valid consent for cookies or local storage where required by law, and for the collection, sharing and use of personal data for personalised ads. If a consent message is shown, use it to accept, reject or change advertising choices.

Legal bases

Where the GDPR, UK GDPR or Swiss data protection law applies, we rely on legitimate interests for basic site operation, security, non-essential local recommendation memory and aggregate service improvement; consent where required for advertising cookies, local storage or personalised ads; and legal obligation where we must keep or disclose information by law.

Who receives information

We may share information with hosting, edge delivery, API, database, security and advertising providers that help run the site. Google receives data when AdSense is enabled. We may also disclose information if required by law, legal process, security investigation or business transfer.

International transfers

Snack Surf is operated from Switzerland and uses service providers that may process information in other countries, including the United States. Where required, transfers are handled using applicable adequacy decisions, contractual safeguards or another lawful transfer mechanism.

Retention

Browser local storage remains on your device until you clear it. Anonymous ratings are kept while the ratings feature is active unless deletion is requested or the data is no longer needed. Server, security and diagnostic logs are kept only as long as needed for operation, security and legal purposes. Google controls its own advertising-cookie and log retention as described in Google's privacy materials.

Your choices and rights

  • You can clear Snack Surf local storage in your browser to remove the viewer id and recent history.
  • You can change or remove a snack rating by selecting the active rating again.
  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser, though some site or ad features may change.
  • Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, port or object to processing of personal data, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
  • If you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you may complain to your local data protection authority. Please contact us first if you want us to review a concern.
  • California residents may have rights to know, delete, correct, opt out of sale or sharing, limit sensitive personal information and avoid discrimination for exercising privacy rights, where the CCPA applies.

Children

Snack Surf is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Do not use the rating features if you are under 13.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy when the site, advertising setup or legal requirements change. The effective date above shows when this version applies.
